John Frederick Germain

John Frederick Germain, 82, of Florence, SC, passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2017, at Carolina’s Hospital with his wife and son, Jonathan, by his side. He was born in East Orange, NJ, to the late Fred and Dorothy Murray Germain. He is also predeceased by a brother, Frederick. He served in the US Army and was stationed primarily at West Point in the Veterinary Corp. He was discharged in 1957. He attended Orange County Community College in Middletown, NY, a school founded by his father, Fred Germain. After graduation, he went on to Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, where he completed both his Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees. He began working for Dixie Cup Manufacturing in Easton, PA, after graduation and retired in 1997 after 37 years. In all of his positions, he was most proud of being the Plant Manager of the Darlington Dixie Cup Paper and Plate plant. John was a long standing member of the Florence Golden K Kiwanis Club; he was a SC Master Gardner; he served for 28 years on the Advisory Board of the SC Vocational Rehab and Training Center in Florence. He was a board member of the Darlington Chamber of Commerce for many years, as well as a volunteer and board member of the Florence Area Humane Society and the American Red Cross. He was the secretary and treasurer of the Florence Amateur Radio Club and for almost 25 years he participated in all the club activities and enjoyed contacting “Hams” all over the world. John also was an animal lover. He rode and raised horses when he was young and his family lived on a farm in Goshen, NY. At one point in his young life he even thought he would be a veterinarian. John is survived by his wife, Carol Jane, whom he married on December 2, 1967, and his three children, John “Jay” Germain (Nichole Boutet) of Stow, ME, James F. Germain (Diana) of Suffolk, VA, and Jonathan M. Germain of West Columbia, SC. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Danielle Foster of ME, Amy Germain of TN, Allen Germain of NH, Brittany, Taylor and Morgan Germain, all of VA. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 AM on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at Cain Calcutt-Stephens Funeral Home. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00, just prior to the service. Burial will be at a later date in Middleton, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Darlington County Animal Shelter or to the Florence Humane Society.The family wishes to express a special thanks to the staff of the Bethea Rehab Nursing Home for their loving care of John.
